Disaster Response Strategy:

Augmenting Capacity of Our School Districts + Providing Critical Support to Our Non-Profit Partners that are Taking Care of Our Most Vulnerable Children

J2W Foundation continues to support shorter-term COVID-19 disaster response efforts within our service areas. We will transition our COVID-19 disaster response grantmaking efforts to our long-term disaster recovery strategy that will support partner organizations for years to come.

"J2W contracted Yount, Hyde, and Barbour (YHB), a regionally-based certified public accounting and consulting firm, to assist 3 partner non-profits with navigating the CARES Act to maximize revenue recovery. All 3 successfully submitted EIDL applications"- April 2020

Grantmaking Support is Targeting:

Finding a way to help solve the IT tech divide by ensuring equitable access to distance learning capabilities for all

  • Served on a recently developed summer Task Force to explore the possibilities of making Winchester an “Internet for All” community to help reduce the “homework divide” negatively impacting lower‑income students
  • Acting as the private partner in a public-private partnership with the City of Winchester, Winchester Public Schools, and Opportunity Scholars
  • Will provide funding to help fully subsidize up to 500 low-income students in need of Comcast’s broadband Internet Essentials program for up to 2 years
  • Program will effectively bring the number of Winchester public school students without access to broadband Internet down to ZERO

Developing community-led, safe-space programs – Learning Labs – designed to minimize learning loss and increase socialization opportunities during the 2020-2021 year in Winchester, VA and Dorchester County, MD

  • Student learning in this COVID environment, whether 100% virtual or hybrid, is a significant challenge to our youngest learners and may cause significant achievement and opportunity gaps if not addressed
  • J2W Foundation facilitated the creation of a coalition of community leaders and non-profits in both communities that are now working to find meaningful solutions
  • In both locations, we have been able to stand up Learning Labs to address the need
  • Learning Labs are existing out-of-school time non-profits, aligned with their respective school district, offering all-day programming, tutoring support, and safe space to elementary school children
  • The intent is to minimize learning loss, increase socialization opportunities, and allow parents to get back to work

Finding a way to help solve the IT tech divide by ensuring equitable access to distance learning capabilities for all

  • Purchased a 1-year contract with the IXL learning software company to deliver personalized, center-based, and tutor-supported additional academic enrichment to 100 students in Dorchester County to further augment school-based content delivery. Will measure results at the end of one year and explore its further use as needed
